Rhodope mountain

The Rhodope Mountain provides many options for trips from Plovdiv. Whether it’s a day trip or you consider spending a night somewhere around, you are in for a great treat. Beautiful nature, delicious food and friendly people. The weekend trip we recommend to you is to Yagodina village which lies in the western part of the Rhodope mountain. It’s a 2.5-hour drive from Plovdiv.

The Dams

Several dams will be on the side of the road while you travel so you will be enjoying some marvelous views. You will pass Krichim dam, Vacha dam, Tsankov kamyk dam, Teshel dam. On the way, there are stops to park the car and enjoy the beauty.

Buynovo River Gorge

Buynovo Gorge is the longest one in Bulgaria. The road goes very closely between the rocks of the mountain. Just drive carefully because there are many turns on the way. The nature around is gorgeous and the ride provides many stunning views.

Accommodation

There are several options for accommodation in Yagodina village – villas, guest houses, and hotel Mursal, which has a sauna and outdoors small pool, heated by fire – a nice place even if the weather is bad or for a winter retreat.

Sightseeing

Orlovo Oko (Eagle’s Eye)

Orlovo Oko (Eagle’s Eye) is a sightseeing platform built at 1563 m above sea level. You can reach it either with a jeep – local people offer such trips, or by hiking. The path starts right next to Hotel Mursal and the hike takes around an hour. The impressive sightseeing spot reveals amazing views of the gorge and the nearby villages, as well as the Bulgarian and Greek mountains and peaks in the distance. Don’t forget to take water and food with you because there are no shops on the top near the platform.

Yagodina cave

The Yagodina cave is one of the most popular tourist sites in Bulgaria. It is a 10-minute ride by car from Yagodina or around an hour walking.

With its 10,500 meters length, it is the third longest cave in Bulgaria and the longest one in the Rhodopes. Of course, tourists may only enter with a guide and explore only a little bit more than one kilometer of it.

You can check the summer and winter working schedules of the cave here.

Devil’s path

A 15-minute ride from Yagodina and you will reach the start of the Devil’s Path – a beautiful eco-trail with many magnificent sights like the Devil’s Bridge and Waterfall. The Devil Bridge is a 10m. long, 3m. wide and around 30m. high rock formation. Its name comes from the belief that only the devil can cross it. The waterfall is near the bridge. You can reach them using steep wooden steps.
