Plovdiv Natural History Museum – a marvel for any age

What is the first thing you associate with the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv? Perhaps you think about the Old town with its beautiful Revival architecture and charming cobbled streets. Or you imagine Kapana – the ailyak neighbourhood where time itself seems to stand still. What you probably don’t think about (yet) is Plovdiv Natural History Museum. This is a place full of marvels which has been captivating the imagination of young and old alike! In recent years the institution has made such progress in making natural sciences fun that it is poised to become one of the most exciting tourist attractions that Plovdiv has to offer!

How old is the Museum?

The Regional Plovdiv Natural History Museum can trace its roots back to one of the iconic educational institutions of the 19th century: the french college St. Augustin. In 1894 the new professor of Natural sciences founded the first natural history collection. It included an impressive array of exhibits from the fields of Geography, Paleontology, Geology etc. The college closed in 1948 and a few years later the Town Council decided to transfer its rich collection to a dedicated building. Thus, after several years of renovation, in the autumn of 1955, the frist exhibition opened doors.

But when it comes to the RNHM, every exposition is curated to captivate the attention of the audience – no matter the age!

Dinosaur Hall

Anyone who loves dinosaurs will have a great time here. The main collection includes exhibits, such as bones, mammoth teeth and oviraptor eggs. In addition there is a dedicated dinosaur hall, which has lifelike sculptures that move and make a sound. The interactive displays include information in two languages (Bulgarian and English).

Terrarium

As an exciting extension of the aquarium, the Terrarium at RNHM Plovdiv offers visitors a chance to see some of nature’s most fascinating cold-blooded creatures up close. Home to a diverse collection of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids, this exhibit showcases species from across the globe. Among its most impressive inhabitants are a caiman, a Nile crocodile called Hector, Burmese albino pythons, yellow anacondas, and many more. Visitors can also observe the color-changing abilities of a chameleon, the striking appearance of a green iguana, spiders from all corners of the globe and various species of terrestrial and aquatic turtles.

Marine world exibit

This is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating sections of the Plovdiv Natural History Museum. This section includes Bulgaria’s largest saltwater aquarium, filled with vibrant marine species from across the globe. Colorful tropical fish, mesmerizing jellyfish, and even small sharks swim in beautifully designed tanks that replicate their natural habitats. The exhibit not only showcases the beauty of marine life but also educates visitors about the importance of ocean conservation.

Antarctic aquarium – first in the world

Did you know that Bulgaria has an Antarctic exploration program? With the progressive warming of the Earth, scientists decided to find a way to study and safekeep some of the unique species they identified there. And here comes the amazing partnership between the RNHM and intrepid explorers. The museum has created, to our best knowledge, the first Antarctic aquarium in the world!

The first inhabitant of this groundbreaking facility has already arrived—Notothenia coriiceps. This fish, native to the waters of the Southern Pole, is the first of its kind to successfully adapt and survive in a controlled environment. Currently in good condition, it marks the beginning of an ambitious project aimed at preserving and studying Antarctic marine life.

Unlike other countries, where Antarctic fish are only studied in research facilities, the RNHM’s thematic-exhibition aquarium allows visitors to see these rare species up close. Thus Bulgaria’s project is unique in its dual approach—combining scientific research with public education.

Expanding the aquarium’s collection is a complex logistical challenge, but the team is determined to introduce more species in the future. Scientists are also exploring the possibility of breeding these fish under laboratory conditions, ensuring their survival even if their natural habitat disappears. This initiative is not just about display—it’s a crucial step toward conservation in a rapidly changing world.

Tropic Hall with live butterflies

The Tropical Hall is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates delicate and beautiful creatures. Located on the second floor, it offers a mesmerizing experience with its lush greenery and fluttering inhabitants. The hall is home exclusively to butterflies and live tropical plants, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere.

Since the museum does not have the facilities to breed butterflies on-site, they are brought in as cocoons. This means that, depending on when you visit, you may see different species taking their first graceful flight. Their vibrant colors, delicate wings, and elegant movements make for a truly magical experience, bringing a piece of the rainforest to Plovdiv.

Planetarium

The Planetarium at RNHM Plovdiv is the most modern of its kind in Bulgaria, offering a cutting-edge digital experience. Built in 2015 by the renowned American company Evans & Sutherland, it features an 8-meter dome and a high-resolution fisheye projector that fully immerses visitors in breathtaking journeys through space. With 50 seats and a diverse selection of daily screenings, the planetarium transports audiences beyond our world—whether exploring the mysteries of black holes, the vast expanse of the Milky Way, or the latest missions of the European Space Agency.

Most shows are in Bulgarian, but English screenings can be arranged with prior booking. Groups of more than 40 people can even select their own film, making the experience customizable.
