Our Visitors from Unusual Destinations – Top 8

One of the top questions people ask the guides from Free Plovdiv Tour is: Where do your visitors come from? Our answer is easy: All over the world. And when we say that, we really mean it! Here are eight of the most unusual destinations from which we had visitors in 2019. Republic of Mauritius The Republic of Mauritius is a small island country in the Indian Ocean, to the east of Madagascar. Throughout its history, the island has been a colony of Portugal, Denmark, France, and Great Britain. It gained its independence in 1965. Nowadays it is a parliamentary republic, ranked by the Global Peace Index 2019 as one of the top 25 most peaceful and safe countries in the world. Mauritius is well-known for its varied flora and fauna with many endemic species. Among stamp lovers it is famous for issuing the Mauritius “Post Office” stamps, which are some of the rarest in the world, selling at auctions for millions of dollars. The Best Annual Events in Plovdiv

Plovdiv, as its motto “Ancient and Eternal” suggests, supports and sustains the continuation of many traditions. And what could be more eternal for humanity than music and culture? Let’s check the best annual events in town! Annual events on the Youth Hill There are many annual events that happen in the city. Here are some of the most renowned, sorted by no particular order than location. The most versatile event location is fittingly located just beyond the north face of our most mystical and highest hill, now called Youth Hill. The fields there are open to hosting all sorts of events. Of course – the location’s versatility comes with upsides and downsides. The versatility comes from the fact that the fields are given they are – meaning people have full freedom to make whatever kind of event they like, as long as they build the infrastructure themselves. You can see them transform 180° from one weekend to the next, coming to show the variety made possible by people who want […]

Gifts and souvenirs from… our tourists?

It’s December – the last month in the calendar and the end of the current year. Time to think back and see if we are happy with the last twelve months we had and what are we thankful for. Furthermore, it is time to look in the future and make some resolutions and promises to ourselves. December is also the time to give others the most precious gifts – give them joy, happiness and gratitude for having them by your side. The Christmas Holidays have one great power over religious and non-religious people – they remind everybody about the joy of giving. The joy of making others happy. It’s up to you whether you are going to achieve that by charity, spending merry time with beloved people or by giving presents. Gifts from tourist But what do walking tours have to do with gifts? Surprisingly – a lot. Isn’t that the best thing about traveling and meeting new people from all over the world – enriching ourselves and others? And […]

Matera – the sister European Cultural Capital of Plovdiv

What is a European Cultural Capital? You probably have heard about the title European Cultural Capital. But who had the idea of such a title on the first place? On a windy January day of 1985, two ministers of culture were having coffee at the Athens airport. They were waiting for their delayed flights. Those were Melina Mercouri from Greece and her French colleague Jack Lang. They had just attended a meeting of European ministers of culture. What a shame, they thought, that there are so few cultural events to bring nations together! According to a popular lore, this is how Ms. Mercouri came up with the idea of creating an annual series of events. They would not only put the spotlight on culture in European cities but also unite Europeans by showing them how much they have in common. Now, more than three decades later, the European Cultural Capital is perhaps the largest collaborative cultural project in the European Union. Two, sometimes three cities from different countries are awarded […]

Kapana Tour

KAPANA TOUR   No, it is neither a popular maze conveniently situated in the vicinities of Plovdiv, nor a beautiful garden in the city centre. In fact this is the logo of our brand new project that we launched I the beginning of April, 2016 – Kapana Tour, tour of the artistic neighborhood of Plovdiv. The aim of this tour will be to give our guests an insight into the history of the neighbourhood, to follow the changes Kapana went through during the centuries, to tell the stories of its inhabitants from the past and the present and to give a look to the future of this magnificent place.   It is worth taking part in the tour!   https://www.facebook.com/plovdivlovebg/photos/ Arts and Crafts District Tour Kapana’s thriving goes hand in hand with our projects’ improvements. This year we decided to make some changes regarding Kapana Tour. You can now find your favourite tour under the name of KAPANA Arts & Crafts District TOUR. What is more, you will have the […]
